Doctors and Researchers
Meet the doctors and researchers who are leading the way with their groundbreaking cannabis work.
Sean D. McAllister, PhD
Dr. Sean McAllister of the Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco has spent years researching cannabidiol, a cannabinoid found in cannabis. "Cannabidiol offers hope of a non-toxic therapy that could treat aggressive forms of cancer without any of the painful side effects of chemotherapy.".
With backing from the National Institute of Health, Dr. Sean McAllister conducted a study and found that cannabidiol inhibited breast cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, and tumor growth.
Dr. Pierre Desprez is the principal Investigator at California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute. The main focus of the laboratory is the regulation of normal and cancerous breast epithelial cell phenotypes by helix-loop-helix transcription factors.
Dr. Manuel Guzman
Dr. Manuel Guzman is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Madrid, Spain. Researcher Dr. Manuel Guzman has done a whole series of studies since 1999 demonstrating the efficacy of cannabinoids to fight cancer. Dr. Manuel Guzman of Complutense University in Madrid, lead author of the only human study yet published of a cannabinoid as cancer treatment, puts it slightly more diplomatically. Dr. Manuel Guzman of Complutense University in Madrid, lead author of the only human study yet published of a cannabinoid as cancer treatment, puts it slightly more diplomatically. The lack of immediate followup to those early reports "remains a mystery to me," he says. Guzman cites a number of obstacles to human trials, including the fact that cannabinoids are "still seen by many doctors and regulatory agencies as drugs of abuse," as well as "lots of paperwork" and a lack of commercial interest in natural compounds that can't be patented.
Prof. Mechoulam is with the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products at the Faculty of Medicine. He is former Rector of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences. His research interests are in the field of the chemistry and biological activity of natural products and medicinal agents. His main contributions are in the field of the constituents of cannabis and the endogenous cannabinoids found in the brain and the periphery. He has published extensively on their pharmacological activities.
Dr. Robert Melamede has a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the City University of New York. Dr. Melamede retired as Chairman of the Biology Department at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs in 2005, where he continues to teach and research cannabinoids, cancer, and DNA repair. Dr. Melamede is recognized as a leading authority on the therapeutic uses of cannabis, and has authored or co-authored dozens of papers on a wide variety of scientific subjects. Dr. Melamede also serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of the International Association for Cannabis as Medicine, the Scientific Advisory Board of Americans for Safe Access, Sensible Colorado, Scientific Advisor for Cannabis Therapeutics as well as a variety other of state dispensaries and marijuana patient advocacy groups. Dr. Melamede, is currently the President & CEO of Cannabis Science Inc., a pioneering U.S. biotech company that is focused on developing pharmaceutical cannabis products.
Dr. William L. Courtney has an extensive medical education that began with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Michigan. He also received his Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University, and Interned for Residency in Psychiatry at California Pacific Medical Center and went on to earned his Post Doctorate in Forensic Examination and Forensic Medicine. Dr. Courtney is currently a member of American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine, the International Cannabinoid Research Society, the International Association of Cannabis as Medicine, and the Society of Clinical Cannabis. Dr. Courtney has also been teaching Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses in clinical cannabis.
Dr. Lester Grinspoon
Dr. Lester Grinspoon is Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a well published author in the field of drugs and drug policy. He has authored more than 140 articles in scientific journals and twelve books, including Marijuana Reconsidered and Marijuana, The Forbidden Medicine. Dr. Grinspoon was senior psychiatrist at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston for 40 years. Dr. Grinspoon is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Psychiatric Association. He was founding editor of the The American Psychiatric Association Annual Review and the Harvard Mental Health Letter.
